Bereaved Israelis and Palestinians Call for Peace

November 8, 2023

We, the bereaved Israeli and Palestinian members of the Parents Circle – Families Forum, pain and grieve anew with each family that is added to the circle of bereavement. We will continue to act in spite of everything and because of everything, to prevent bereavement and pain from all the people who live here.

We were joined by bereaved Palestinian and Israeli members, Laila Alsheikh and Ayelet Harel. Watch the recording to hear their stories of loss, of reconciliation, and of hope, and to learn more about the Parents Circle’s transformative peace activities and our call for peace.

About the speakers

Laila masked

Laila Alsheikh lives in Bethlehem in the West Bank. In 2002, her 6 months old son, Qussay, became ill and Israeli soldiers prevented Layla from taking him to the hospital for more than five hours. Qussay soon died from the lack of timely treatment.
Laila joined the Parents Circle in 2016. Following her son’s death, she never thought of revenge, but rather has devoted her time and energy to ensuring a better, more peaceful future for her children.

Ayelet masked

Ayelet Harel is Israeli and lives in Givatayim. In 1982, Ayelet’s brother, Yuval, was killed while serving during the Lebanon War. Ayelet was 16 at the time. She joined the Parents Circle after a 20 year career as a TV and film producer. Ayelet is the producer of the documentary film Two Sided Story. The film follows an encounter group of 27 Palestinians and Israelis who participated in the Parents Circle’s Parallel Narrative Experience project.
